Concert de Noël

Sure on this Shining Night

Fine music in the dark days before Christmas. We perform music from different periods that warms the heart, makes one think and gives hope; the serious ‘Earth song’ describes how music and song can bring light when the scorched earth cries out in vain and war and power blind us. James Agee’s text In ‘Sure on this Shining Night’ was set to music by Morten Lauridsen and we reproduce it here in full because it so captures the imagination and is the theme of our concert:

Sure on this shining night
Of starmade shadows round,
Kindness must watch for me
This side the ground.

The late Year lies down the north.
All is healed, all is health.
High summer holds the earth.
Hearts all whole.

Sure on this shining night
I weep for wonder
Wand’ring far alone
Of shadows on the stars.
